The Cottage
The Era-1880-1930

The Cottage

The move into the new century was a move into new ideas and new technology. Our cottage has some of the old and some of the new. Watch for these items as you check out the rooms.

The kitchen-Wonderful! A combination coal/wood and gas stove. The "Modern" housewifes Hoosier like cupboard with working table top, flour/sugar bin and ample room for utensils and supplies. The oak ice box would set near the door for easy access for the iceman's twice weekly visits. The Hoosier kitchen table with its porcelain top-easy to clean and easy to move. The floor should be covered with linoleum (and will be once we find a piece) for easy care. (NOTE the use of "easy"). That was the catch word for this period of time. Free up the housewife!

The dining room-more forma, usually with heavy oak furnishings. An expandable dining room table, the dishware, and good silver. The all purpose buffet (a show piece in its own design!) with storage for china and linens. Occasional pieces like fern stands and clocks often were found here. The Secretary- a desk, china closet and a shelf for a knickknacks all in one. The sewing machine - a utility work bench made beautiful.

The bedroom- The traditional three piece bedroom outfit with a faux Jenny Lind Bedstead, box springs and coiled mattress. Notice the beautiful hand crocheted bed covering. A high-boy with drawers and the triple mirror dressing table filled our lady's boudoir. Closets, for hanging clothes, began to appear in master bedrooms, replacing the usual hooks and nails. Lots of beautiful table scarves and runners were decorative accents. Quilts became acceptable as wall hangings. This room mya have had carpet on the floor or at least rag rugs for warmth.

The parlor/living room- Here we have the famous leather fainting couch. Horrible to sit on, but not uncomfortable to lie on! Our console holds flowers, lamps, and small collectibles. The hall tree usually would be near the front door to receive hats. The mirror was ready for a quick look at the face and hair before opening the door to salesmen or visitors. This floor would be covered with the best carpet in the house, most likely placed over a good hardwood floor. Family entertainment would be the Edison Victrola and a good assortment of popular records. If there was room, several wing back chairs would provide comfort and warmth in this room. Heat was probably provided by a hard coal heater at first, then, as the family prospered, a floor furnace would be placed in the basement with a register coming into this room.

Pictures and art objects finish our cottage into a proper home.
